How is that even possible, a beating heart without a body? And why does that mean less animal testing? Explain! The researchers at LifeTec Group are often asked about their work. What exactly are they up to in that lab on Kennedyplein in Eindhoven? In order to share their developments, LifeTec Group participated in 'Het Weekend van de Wetenschap' (Science Weekend) on 8 October:

Melanie looks back:

"For me the Weekend van de Wetenschap (October 8) was a very fun but also interesting day.

I was quite positively surprised how many people where interested in our company and the science, especially also a lot of young people, students as well as children."

"Presenting the ex vivo liver model was quite rewarding, as I could not only explain what I’m currently working on and planning to do in the future, but also the background of why we do this work and how it can possibly help patients in the future."

'deep reaching questions'

"I got a lot of deep reaching questions not only on a scientific level, but also regarding my motivations and reasons for the particular work I was presenting as well as my career choices and the workings of the company.

A lot of the questions even were the same as I got asked on scientific conferences, which to me shows the high level of interest and also knowledge in biomedical science of our visitors."

"Some of the visitors were students looking for a direction to pursue their education and I hope that we could inspire a few of them. And the kids were a lot of fun of course, looking around with big eyes in their oversized lab coats was just too cute. The braver ones even dared to touch some of the tissues and this way got some hands-on experience.

Finally I was very happy that we got an overall very positive feedback from all the visitors and I feel that it was a very successful day."

Noemi adds:

“The Weekend van de Wetenschap was a great experience, especially because we had the chance to share our work with people from different ages and backgrounds in an interactive way.

It was amazing to be all here with the same aim of learning something new from each other."

"The possibility to give an idea of our approach in making research using and showing our platforms as they are is always important to me and I liked very much that the visitors were sharing my enthusiasm."

"I hope that some of the experiences in our lab like using an ultrasound machine, inflating an angioplasty balloon or touching a liver could have given to people more insights in what science and medicine are and maybe inspired young future engineers or surgeons!”
