The quest

Cardiovascular pathologies are the main cause of death or permanent disability, affecting about 20% of the European citizens. New solutions to emerging problems in cardiac care, combining science, medicine and technology, are still required, despite of continuous advancements in the field.

The MUSICARE Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks (ITN-ETN) is a major European research and training consortium in the framework of H2020 programme focused on cardiac pathologies.

The MUSICARE Program gathers medical professionals, academia and industry to deal with the main challenges in these fields, integrating the training of next generation research professionals in cardiac care with the development of breakthrough technologies, for a more effective treatment of patients.

Consistently with its mission to improve patient’s quality of life, and with its research-driven culture, LifeTec Group is involved in MUSICARE to conduct research on an innovative catheter-based therapy.

What was done

Within MUSICARE LifeTec Group is assessing different combinations of light and materials and their effect on tissue response, to improve on currently used applications such as drug delivery and treatment of vascular grafts. The long-term effect of these approaches on tissue response is tested in our vascular platform (VABIO Platform), in which living blood vessels are cultured under physiologic hemodynamic flows and pressures, serving as a model for the patient. The optimal combination of light and materials could be used in an innovative catheter-based device that could significantly improve patient’s care.
